i Three of Kronos’ children have already been mentioned. Empedocles identified Hades, Zeus and Hera, as fire, air and earth respectively. (The fourth element, water, was Kronos’ grandchild, Persephone, daughter of Zeus and his sister Demeter. Another of Kronos’ grandchildren, Hephaestus, who was the son of Zeus and another of his sisters, Hera, features briefly in a later chapter.)6

ii Kronos’ three sons and three daughters were; Zeus and Hera, god and goddess of the sky; Poseidon and Demeter, god of the sea and goddess of the land; and, Hades and Hestia, god of the underworld and goddess of the hearth. The gods of the sea and the underworld, and the goddesses of the sky, land and hearth were all contained within time. Only Zeus, god – the masculine and therefore ‘active’ principle – of the sky, remained outside time.
